Andy Warhol Chronology

Susan Pile [from her letters to Ed Walsh]:

October 7, 1966

Dear Ed,

... I am becoming an acceptable part of the (DAYLIGHT) Warhol world (last night was my first venture out of the sun). My classes are all in the AM, except Monday’s English (my teacher [Kate Millet] is a painter, married to a sculptor; requires Fugs, EPI, Warhol movies, just everything). From there (Barnard) to Factory to lovely YW to do homework. I like Barnard all right...

A. I saw the EPI over the Dom Friday night (upstairs with Paul Morrissey). So different (Heroin). I didn’t believe it. The slides are great. Neither Ingrid nor Mary was there.

B. The whole group is going on tour (Boston and 3 cities in Ohio) the last weekends in October, so I hope you can come next weekend. (Ginsberg is reading Oct. 15--required of my English class--no doubt Gerard and many others will be going, too, from there to the Velvets....)

I understand things a little better now, am more casual and unhurried. I can appreciate the lack of apparent activity at the Factory, though I cannot recommend it for myself....

* NOTE: Ingrid Superstar vanished shortly after you saw her. In the East Village she emerged out of nowhere to great surprise and astonishment of all. The thing is, Andy was preparing The Ingrid Superstar Life Story and had no Ingrid, so they found a double who had a skeleton face and body to play her part. They were continually lamenting The Superstar’s absence when Ingrid’s sudden materialization occurred... (S)

Dear Ed,

... Friday: Naturally hit it to the Dom. I always go down with Paul and Gerard and eat dinner with them downstairs (Gerard eating my french fries - the better for the greasy Malanga image - while waiting for Benedetta)... I always see the first show with Ari then take him over to Paul Morrissey’s apartment to play during the second set.

Saturday: Definitely the best show ever done. Mary did not show, and Gerard and Ronny [Cutrone] did Venus in Furs. Also the last show - they will be in NYC Thanksgiving because they cannot get bookings for that weekend. Tennessee Williams came to renew old intimacies with Andy (also gave Gerard a big kiss) and really liked it. After it was over, Nico, Ari, Ingrid Superstar, Paul Morrissey, Gerard, Paul Katz and I grooved out at Malanga hideaway La Luna supreme Italian restaurant in Chinatown... Ingrid, who has been haunted by evil spirits of late, wears charmed necklace of tinfoil hearts and mirrors to keep them away. Showed her new Poltergeist poem to Tennessee Williams, who couldn’t get over it.... (S)
