Andy Warhol's wrong birth certificate

When Jean Stein was writing the book Edie, An American Biography, she requested Andy Warhol's birth certificate from the State of Pennsylvania. The document she was provided with for Andrew Warhola showed the birthdate as October 28, 1930. (EDIE190) Warhol was always elusive about his date of birth. When asked why he gave the wrong date to Who's Who, he responded, "Oh, I did it because I couldn't believe that they'd print it or something like that." (SG523)

However, the August 6, 1928 date is the correct one. The birth certificate provided to Jean Stein was for a different person with the same name. That particular Andrew Warhola graduated in 1947 from Forest City High School and later applied to a pre-dental programme at the University of Scranton. The photograph of him on file had no resemblance to Andy Warhol. (BC460)
